Description
This course is a required course to be completed in the second year. The course will be run in a discussion-oriented and seminar style. This course follows three steps: 1) note-taking skill, 2) oral presentation skill, and 3) writing skill. Students first develop note-taking skills by taking notes on important points during the class discussions and research assignments. The learning contents vary according to students’ major areas, which are divided into 6 different groups: Engineering/Natural Sciences, Medical Sciences , Humanities/SocialSciences /Law, Economic-Financial/B usiness, Education, Arts/Music/Physical Education. Based on their findings through the discussions and research on major-related areas, students make oral presentations, and finally, write summary reports on the topics that they have made presentations on. All the tasks in this course will be performed in English. Therefore, students will be able to develop their listening and read ing skills in addition to speaking and writing skills.
Goal The main purpose of this course is to improve the skills of note-taking, presentation, and writing, which are necessary for taking courses taught in English. With the comprehensive ability of English including listening and speaking skills, students will be trained to make a presentation and write a report well enough to prepare themselves for professional career over current job market competitions .

B. Basic Academic English

Description
This course is a prerequisite for "Professional Academic Englis h". The students who are assessed as Level G at Hanyang Fresh men English Level Test held at the beginning of the freshman year must pass this course to take "Professional Academic English." The 3rd and 4th year students are also eligible to take this course as an elective in the field of foreign languages. In order to develop the basic English presentation ability to be prepared for "Professional Academic English" for sophomores, students are to get familiar to English presentation and confidence in it through the following process: first, brainstorming of given topics in small-sized group discussions; next, outlining of their thoughts in logic; third, practicing of presentation in front of the classmates. Different from the "Professional Academic English" dealt on major knowledg e-related contents in more depth, Basic Academic English will be focused on individuals' adaptation to a given presentation frame suggested with certain contents in the text book under the guidance of the instructor, which include s presentation skills such as pronunciation, voice, eye-c ontact, stance and posture, instead of preparing manuscripts for presentation. Even in the session of writing a report after the presentation of a topic is completed, utilization of the given format rather than creating report contents is emphasized for practicing how to construct and develop a report on a certain topic.
Goal The main purpose of this course is to improve the skills of note-taking, presentation, and writing, which are necessary for taking courses taught in English. Improvement of classroom English and the comprehensive ability of English including listening and speaking skills will be expected, too.

C. English through Songs

Description
The objectives of this class involve listening, writing, and gaining familiarity with idioms, expressions, and cultural references. In class, students listen to songs (chosen by the teacher), perhaps with cloze exercises for listening comprehension practice, and later with the printed lyrics. Class discussions focus on the language of the lyrics (vocabulary, expressions not usually learned in textbooks, even pronunciation and grammar if appropriate), social context, and interpretations of meaning. The class is divided into units according to genre (e.g., R & B, Rock and Roll, Folk) and/or theme (e.g., love, war/protest,religion). Some class time is used to cover basic writing skills.
Goal The main purpose of this course is to improve students’ listening ability and enhance verbal understanding through diverse styles of songs and poetry by listening to music. This course is basically a literature or poetry class with a strong listening element. Through being exposed to music from unfamiliar styles and eras, students will get absorbed to learning English smoothly.

D. 영어시사토론

Description
This is primarily a discussion class in which students talk about current world issues. Students would be required to read stories from newspapers or magazine (hardcopy or on-line) or watch videos posted on internet websites to prepare for class discussio n. Additional benefits to the students would be improving reading and listening skills. Additionally, to encourage active reflection, students will keep a portfolio of the work they do on each news story or news report. This work will include a vocabulary journal, summaries of the material read or viewed, and essays written about the issues. Students may be required to put additional work into the portfolio, as deemed by the teacher. Topics that will be discussed will be local (relating to Korea) and global issues, some of which might be controversial topics, such as the Iraq War, the Free Trade Agreement, death penalty, and politics. Students will make both group and individual presentations on a variety of topics throughout the semester. At least two stude nt/teacher interviews will be conducted over the semester.
Goal The primary goal of this course is improving the speaking ability in class discussions, while, at the same time, exposing them global issues. Secondary goals include improving student’s reading, listening, and writing skills.
